The enthusiasm of the political science professor was legitimate. She’d never heard of Move to Amend, but after learning that we were educating and organizing to increase people power by abolishing “corporate personhood” and “money as free speech,” said loudly at the end of a session where she presented: “We need to work together!” 

This pronouncement was a recurring takeaway experienced by Move to Amend Board Member Daniel Lee and Co-Director Greg Coleridge who attended the annual conference of  the Law & Society Association in Denver in early June. 

The “we need to work together” theme arose in numerous contexts during the 4-day conference.

Today, June 19th, is Juneteenth—a day of profound significance in our nation's history. As we celebrate this pivotal moment of freedom and justice, we also reflect on the ongoing struggles for equality that remain. In this spirit, we reach out with an urgent and exciting update for this week’s We the People Wednesdays action.

This We The People Wednesday, the Move to Amend National Team is excited to introduce Cole Bennett - our newest Co-Director / Political Justice Director!

After finishing a year-long National Fellowship with Move to Amend and earning a Juris Doctorate from the Georgia State University College of Law, Cole is eager to shift his efforts to using his political and legal expertise full-time to eliminate corporate constitutional rights, pass the We The People Amendment, and build the foundation of a lasting democracy movement within the burgeoning political hub of Atlanta and across the entire southeast region. 

As we welcome the vibrant energy of spring, we're excited to share the latest updates and opportunities with you. From significant progress in Congress to upcoming events and ways to get involved, there's a lot to look forward to. Let's dive into what's happening at Move to Amend and how you can make a difference!

June 2024 Affiliate Spotlight 

This month, we shine a light on the dedicated efforts of our Greater Dayton and Miami County volunteers, who have been making significant strides in advocating for the We the People Amendment. From impactful city council statements to rallies and educational initiatives, their grassroots activism is truly inspiring. You're personally invited to come connect and engage with MTA founding member and organizing powerhouse, Dr. Riki Ott (and other movement leaders) during this month's exciting Eco Net Call. 

Dr. Ott is a marine toxicologist, activist, author and former commercial fisher ma'am.

Ott has long opposed the legal doctrine of corporate constitutional rights and has been advocating for amending the U.S. Constitution to clarify that corporations do not possess human rights. She argues that corporations use personhood to seek extraordinary privileges. She cites, for example, Exxon's attempt to re-enter Prince William Sound—after being banned from the area by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990—by claiming a Fifth Amendment right.

An "epiphany" about corporate personhood came to Ott during the struggle against Exxon, during which she sought to answer the question: "How did corporations get so big that they can manipulate the legal system?'

After the oil Spill she asked herself, "Do I know enough to make a difference. And Do I care enough?"
