Welcome to our July newsletter, coming to you a little later than usual because we've been deeply engaged in critical, on-the-ground work in Washington, DC.!!
Our National Co-directors, Jennie Spanos, Katie Krasinski, and Alfonso Saldaña, alongside dedicated team members, spent the latter half of June and early July advocating for H.J.R. 54, the We the People Amendment, and standing in solidarity with our partners. We are excited to share our experiences and successes from this intense period of advocacy.
🏛️ Congressional Update:
Our time in Washington, DC, was marked by robust and fruitful engagements with numerous Congressional offices. We met with over 60 offices, both through scheduled appointments and impromptu discussions. Each interaction was a step forward in our ongoing fight to end corporate personhood and return true democratic power to the people.
Among the highlights was our meeting with Rep. Glenn Ivey (MD-4) a new democrat, who we visited with a constituent, and we found a receptive audience for our cause. Rep. Ivey's staff openness to dialogue was encouraging, and we left with a sense of optimism about potential support for the "We the People Amendment."
We also had productive discussions with staff members from key offices, including Rep. Kim Schrier (WA-08) and Rep. Jasmine Crockett (TX-30). These meetings underscored the importance of our grassroots efforts and the growing recognition of our amendment’s significance.
In addition, engaging meetings with staff from offices such as Rep. Don Davis (NC-01), Rep. Brad Schneider (IL-10), and Rep. Kathy Manning (NC-06) provided valuable insights and avenues for future collaboration.
Key Events and Rallies
While in DC, we immersed ourselves in pivotal events and marches. On June 19th, Juneteenth, we participated in celebrations in Anacostia, gathering petition signatures and connecting with community members. The energy and passion we witnessed were inspiring, reinforcing our commitment to fighting systemic racism and inequality.
We also showed up at the Supreme Court in response to the horrific decisions being made, making a clear connection to Move to Amend's mission and values.
We also proudly represented Move to Amend at the Mass Poor People's & Low-Wage Workers' Assembly & Moral March on Washington, D.C., on June 29th. During this powerful event, our national co-director delivered a compelling message about the urgent need for political and economic justice on a person-to-person basis, gathering petitions amongst the crowd. Our presence there underscored our solidarity with the broader movement for social justice.
In early July, we joined the Veterans for Peace March, which spanned from Maine to Washington, DC. This historic walk highlighted the intersections of corporate power, endless wars for profit, social injustice and environmental destruction. Our participation culminated in a rally at the White House, where we stood alongside veterans advocating for peace, justice, and democracy. As we look forward, our work in Washington, DC, serves as a foundation for continued advocacy. Although we haven't seen new cosponsor additions since Rep. Deluzio joined us on June 12th, the groundwork laid during our visits is invaluable. It's crucial to maintain the pressure on our representatives, ensuring they hear our collective voice loud and clear.
Take Action Now! 📞
We encourage all our supporters to continue calling, writing, and visiting their representatives. Your involvement is vital in amplifying our message and gaining further support for the "We the People Amendment."
Together, we can build a democracy that truly represents the people. Thank you for your unwavering support and dedication.
Here are other ways you can contribute to the success of H.J.R. 54
📢 Pledge to Amend: One of the most impactful ways to support our cause is by urging candidates for public office to take the Pledge to Amend. By signing the pledge, candidates commit to using their office to advance and support H.J.R. 54, the We the People Amendment. Encourage your local candidates to take the pledge and show their commitment to ensuring that corporations and other artificial entities do not have constitutional rights, and that money is not considered speech.
Collect Petition Signatures: Help us reach 600,000 signatures by collecting them at community events, farmers' markets, or even online. Get started with a recruiter ID and share it with your network.
Volunteer: Join our grassroots efforts by volunteering with a local Move to Amend affiliate. From tabling at events to organizing workshops, there's always something you can do to help.
Donate: Every dollar you contribute directly fuels our grassroots efforts. Without your generosity, we can’t organize in-person events, advocate for change, or make our voices heard on the Hill. Your gift is the key to continuing our fight to put corporations in their place and end money in politics.
