Today, June 19th, is Juneteenth—a day of profound significance in our nation's history. As we celebrate this pivotal moment of freedom and justice, we also reflect on the ongoing struggles for equality that remain. In this spirit, we reach out with an urgent and exciting update for this week’s We the People Wednesdays action.
Move to Amend's connection to Juneteenth lies in our shared pursuit of justice, equality, and true democracy. Juneteenth marks the end of a horrific era of slavery and serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight against systemic racism and inequality. Similarly, Move to Amend is dedicated to reducing the corrupting influence of money in politics and ending corporate personhood, ensuring that democracy serves all people—not just the wealthy and powerful few.
The systemic racism highlighted by Juneteenth is mirrored in the economic and political inequalities Move to Amend seeks to address. Corporate influence in politics often perpetuates policies that harm marginalized communities. By ending corporate personhood, we aim to dismantle these inequalities and create a fairer society.
The 14th Amendment and Corporate Personhood
The 14th Amendment, originally intended to protect the rights of freed slaves, has been co-opted by corporations to claim constitutional rights meant for human beings. This distortion of justice is one of the key issues Move to Amend addresses. By passing the We the People Amendment, we can restore the 14th Amendment to its rightful purpose—ensuring equal protection for all citizens.
Our national grassroots coalition is working tirelessly to pass HJR 54, the We the People Amendment, to the U.S. Constitution. Our mission includes:
- Ending Corporate Personhood: Corporations are not people and should not have the same rights as human beings. This ensures that corporate interests do not overpower the voices of individual citizens.
- Regulating Political Spending: Money is not speech. Regulating political spending is essential to ensure that all citizens have an equal voice in our democracy.
Take Action Now:
Due to Juneteenth, Congress will be closed, but this presents a unique opportunity to make our voices heard locally. With Representatives back in their districts, we can take direct action by engaging them in person. Here’s how:
Exciting News!
We are thrilled to announce that we have gained a new cosponsor for the We the People Amendment. On June 12, 2024, Representative Christopher R. Deluzio (D) from Pennsylvania's 17th district, joined our cause. This achievement underscores the growing support for our mission. Although this happened just before our current lobbying efforts, it energizes our ongoing work.
Why Now?
Our national co-directors are in Washington, DC, working tirelessly to advocate for HJR 54 in Congress and at the many Juneteenth events they'll be attending.
While they lobby in DC, we need to ensure that our Representatives hear our voices loud and clear in their home districts. This dual approach can amplify our efforts and show the strength of our grassroots movement.
A Sneak Peek:
To give you a glimpse of the important work happening on the ground, we’ve included some photos from the last couple of days of lobbying. While we don't want to reveal too much just yet, we hope these images inspire you to take action and be a part of this significant effort.
