We the People has never included all the people, but what we call "democracy" has dramatically declined every time the Supreme Court declares corporate entities are legal "persons" (aka "corporate personhood") and money spent in elections is "free speech." Corporate personhood and money as speech are not inevitable or irreversible. Abolishing them would reduce the widening gap between the majority public demands for peace, justice, and a livable world and the current policies of injustice, violence and plunder. It's up to us to create the change.
Greg Coleridge (he/him) is Co-Director of Move to Amend, which is organizing to pass the We the People Amendment to abolish corporate constitutional rights and money as free speech. He worked for more than three decades with the American Friends Service Committee in Ohio. He is the author of The Depth of Change: Selected Writings and Remarks on Social Change (2022), Citizens over Corporations: A Brief History of Democracy in Ohio and Challenges to Freedom in the Future (2003) and more. He maintains and distributes via email a weekly REAL Democracy History Calendar and Monetary History Calendar. He served an elected term on the national governing board of Common Cause and was a Principal with the Program on Corporations, Law & Democracy (POCLAD).
