Election night was a wild ride, and it's looking like there will be more chaos to come.
As usual, Corporate Rule was the big winner across the board -- with unprecedented sums of money sunk into campaigns for corporate politicians and ballot initiatives that placed corporate profit over workers' and tenants' rights.
But the good news is: our movement to end corporate rule and get money out of politics had some BIG WINS on Election night!
First, a huge shout out to US Representative-elect Cori Bush (MO-1), who took our Pledge to Amend and is now headed to Congress to join the "The Squad" as a cosponsor of House Joint Resolution 48 - the #WeThePeopleAmendment! Bush ran a truly grassroots campaign, ousting a corporate-funded legacy incumbent -- and we love to see it.
The #WeThePeopleAmendment language was also on local ballots in Ohio and Wisconsin. And as usual, they ALL won -- by a landslide.
Painesville, OH (78%):
Land O' Lakes, WI (84%):
Winnebago County, WI (83%):
IMPORTANT NOTE: all three of these people's victories took place in counties/towns that otherwise went to Trump -- proving once again that this is a trans-partisan issue. This brings us to a total of 678 local/state resolutions and ballot initiatives in support of a 28th Amendment that would abolish corporate personhood and money as free speech!
That's grassroots power
All the credit to local Move to Amend organizers in Ohio, and United to Amend organizers in Wisconsin, for these incredible wins!!!
Stay tuned this week as we follow up with more analysis around the election, and the role corporate rule/money in politics are playing in the outcomes -- and what we can do to advance democracy and the #WeThePeopleAmendment in this critical moment.
And hang in there. We still have a lot to hope for and work toward!
