Defending champion Cameron Smith is not in the field this year. Jordan Spieth is fourth through two rounds at 13-under and Tom Kim is four shots off the lead at 12-under.
Scheffler's path back to the world No. 1 ranking is simple: If he finishes in a tie for third place or better, he will move past Rory McIlroy, who is not playing this weekend. McIlroy is the first player in history to end a year with the FedEx Cup, the points title on the DP World Tour and the No. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Ranking.
Last year, Scheffler ascended to the top of the rankings with his win at the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play and held the No. 1 spot for 30 weeks. Scheffler was the third-fastest to No. 1, taking the ranking after 92 starts as a pro. Tiger Woods needed just 21 starts to climb to the top of the rankings while Spieth did it in 77 starts. How to Watch Sentry Tournament of Champions, Third Round: Stream PGA Tour Live, TV Channel

A 38-player field loaded with winners (and 10 more who made the 2022 FedEx Cup final) continues play Saturday at Kapalua’s Plantation Course for the third round of the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions, the first of the Tour’s new schedule of designated events.
After opening the tournament with a 9-under 64, Collin Morikawa fired a Friday 7-under 66 to carry a two-shot lead into the weekend over J.J. Spaun and Scottie Scheffler. The birdies are abundant in Maui, as Collin Morikawa pulled ahead of the Round 1 logjam at the top of the leaderboard to lead the tournament by two shots at 16 under par at the halfway point on Friday.
A resurgent Morikawa has yet to make a bogey on the Plantation course this week, but given the friendly scoring conditions, he’ll have to keep the pedal to the metal if he wants to lift the trophy on Sunday.
And there are plenty of top players eager to usurp him. Scottie Scheffler and J.J. Spaun are only two shots back, while Jordan Spieth and Tom Kim trail Morikawa’s lead by three and four shots, respectively.
Morikawa and Scheffler will play in Saturday’s final pairing at 3:45 p.m. ET.
