Take Local Action on the 15th Anniversary of Citizens United

January 21, 2025 marks the 15th anniversary of the infamous Citizens United v FEC Supreme Court decision.

The decision resulted in an avalanche of special interest money from corporate entities and the super rich spent on political elections.

Described as one of The Worst Supreme Court Decisions of All Time, Citizens United is responsible in large part for the $20 billion spent in the 2024 elections – much of it coming from a handful of billionaires, as well as corporate Political Action Committees (PACs).

You’re invited to a call to plan local actions to mark the 15th Anniversary of Citizens United.

The planning call is Monday, January 13 at 5pm PT / 8pm ET

Register BELOW

The planning call will not simply focus on Citizens United because the problems of money in elections and corporate constitutional rights (“corporate personhood”) did not originate with Citizens United – despite what many believe. The constitutional decision that “money equals speech” predates Citizens United by nearly five decades and “corporate personhood” by more than a century. There was no democratic paradise before Citizens United

Therefore, the call will focus on plans to:

  • Urge your Congressperson to co-sponsor the We the People Amendment when it’s re-introduced in the 119th Session of Congress sometime early this year.
  • Visit the office of your Congressperson on Tuesday, January 21. Hold a brief action outside holding signs and/or handing out fliers before going into the office to deliver a letter urging them to co-sponsor and, if possible, meet with local staff to share your views

The call will share templates of talking points, a press release, a letter to deliver to your congressperson and instructions on organizing an event outside their local office.

Register BELOW

The action is one further step toward educating, advocating and organizing for transformative change – to spotlight the anti-democratic impact of Citizens United, but of so much more.

We are living in a country governed by the wealthy (plutocracy) and corporations (corptocracy). It’s up to us to create one authentically governed by We the People – for the very first time.
