Democracy Day in Shaker Heights Scheduled for September 13
It’s more important than ever to shine a light on the corrupting influence on democracy of corporate constitutional rights and money as speech. Join us at Shaker Heights Democracy Day, virtually or in person!
SHAKER HEIGHTS (August 31, 2021) – Monday, September 13 has been designated by the City of Shaker Heights as its third Democracy Day. Democracy Day was established by an initiative petition approved by Shaker Heights voters in November 2016. It is held every two years within 90 days of the November general election.
An in-person and virtual public hearing will be held at 7 pm on Monday, September 13 regarding the initiative’s support of a movement to amend the U.S. Constitution to establish that only human beings, not corporations, are legal persons with Constitutional rights and that money is not free speech and therefore regulating political contributions and spending does not equate to limiting political speech. The hearing will be in Council Chambers at City Hall, 3400 Lee Rd. Those attending in person or via Zoom will be granted up to five minutes to speak. A link to join the hearing by Zoom will be available at shakeronline.com/democracyday before September 13.
The ordinance voters approved, now Section 113.10 of the City’s Ordinances, is available to the public at the Office of the Clerk of Council at City Hall and at shakeronline.com.
