The massive grassroots opposition to the proposed construction of the Atlanta Police Foundation (APF) Public Safety Training Center, infamously known as Cop City, in Atlanta is unquestionably about preventing the dramatic increase of the militarization of police and subsequent tactical suppression of civil dissent, as well as the destruction of the largest urban forest in the United States.
But it’s also about corporate power.
Major national corporations support the building of Cop City. Atlanta City Council recently approved $30 million for its construction of the $90 million facility – the balance coming from the corporate-funded Atlanta Police Foundation.
Despite the mass public opposition locally, nationally, even internationally – including arrests and the labeling of opponents as “domestic terrorists” – resistance continues, both in the streets and the ballot box.
