We the People Amendment Introduced in 115th Congress

February 2, 2017

This week Rep. Rick Nolan (MN) reintroduced the We the People Amendment in Congress

Nolan is joined by 20 brave bipartisan colleagues. We're right on track with this 2017 strategic plan goal: Reintroduce the We the People Amendment and acquire 35 co-sponsors.

Contact your member of Congress and ask them to co-sponsor H.J.R. 48, the We the People Amendment!

Upon reintroducing the bill, Rep. Nolan said:

“It’s time to establish once and for all that corporations are not people, money is not free speech, and our elections and public policy-making process are not for sale to the highest corporate bidders. It’s time to take the molding and shaping of public policy out of corporate boardrooms, away from corporate lobbyists, and give it back to the American people. We must divert Congress’s focus away from the corporate interests of millionaires and billionaires and return it back to creating good-paying jobs and rebuilding our middle class.”

For a multi-year campaign like ours, it's desirable to maintain the same ID number in each session of Congress. Resolutions are numbered as they are introduced (or "dropped" in D.C. parlance), and under normal circumstances it would have taken a while to reach H.J.R. 48. We had expected to make this announcement in March or April, with the full complement of co-sponsors from the last Congress and then some -- instead we got notice Monday that resolution 48 was right around the corner!

As I'm sure you're aware, normal circumstances are a thing of the past in Washington D.C. these days, and bills are dropping at an enormous speed. We expect the full contingent of co-sponsors on the bill, along with some new names soon, with more to come by the end of the year.

You can help us reach that goal!

Contact your member of Congress and ask them to co-sponsor H.J.R. 48, the We the People Amendment!

"The Citizens United decision is not the cause, it is a symptom of the systemic problem of the Courts extending constitutional rights under the 1st, 4th, 5th, 14th Amendments to corporations,” stated Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap, Move to Amend National Director. “Americans have voted for an amendment to outlaw corporate personhood over 300 times, in liberal and conservative communities alike. The message is clear: we must stop giving away our Constitutional rights to corporations and we must remove big money and special interests from the legal and political process entirely."

Let your Congress member know how corporate rule is destroying democracy and how they can take steps to protect and expand it. Contact your member of Congress and ask them to co-sponsor H.J.R. 48, the We the People Amendment!
