They’re calling for an amendment. Let’s make sure they know about ours
|
People with national platforms are saying what this movement has been organizing around for years: we need a constitutional amendment to confront big money in politics. Jon Stewart, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, and Pete Buttigieg are bringing this conversation to large audiences. This is an opening we have worked years to create—and we need your help turning it into support for the We the People Amendment, H.J.Res. 54. |

Watch and share these clips: Dr. Abdul El-Sayed: “I want to end Citizens United.” Jon Stewart: “There has to be a process of amending the Constitution.” Pete Buttigieg: “Let me give you one more: a constitutional amendment to deal with money in politics.” These statements open a door. Your outreach can help turn them into support for the We the People Amendment (H.J.Res. 54). Overturning Citizens United is not enough. Corporate rule was built case by case, over decades. Citizens United is one ruling in a much larger system of precedents that grant corporations constitutional rights and protect political spending as speech. Reversing that decision alone would leave other foundations of corporate power standing. And that power reaches far beyond elections. Corporations invoke constitutional protections to challenge public safeguards. Concentrated wealth shapes whose priorities government serves. Our fights for healthcare, housing, fair wages, clean water, peace and a livable future keep colliding with the same question: who holds the power to decide? The We the People Amendment, H.J.Res. 54, addresses the roots. It establishes that constitutional rights belong to human beings and that spending money to influence elections must not be treated as First Amendment speech. A billionaire’s spending power should never determine the strength of their political voice. This is the crisis of our time. We cannot keep asking people to vote for change while leaving concentrated wealth with the power to overwhelm their voices and obstruct that change. More than 200 candidates have already taken Move to Amend’s pledge. Now we need to make every candidate answer—and bring this demand to audiences across the country. Bring the amendment directly to the people raising this issueContact Jon Stewart, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, Pete Buttigieg, and other public figures speaking out about money in politics. Tag them. Write to their teams. Comment on their videos. Request a meeting. Be respectful, persistent, and specific about what you want them to do. Here is a message you can use:
Ask them to take a concrete next step: Discuss H.J.Res. 54 publicly and explain why the solution must go beyond Citizens United. Interview its sponsor, Representative Pramila Jayapal, or invite Move to Amend into the conversation. Ask candidates where they stand on the amendment and encourage them to take the pledge. Attending a Jon Stewart taping? Bring this question. Jon takes audience questions before his show: How to Get Tickets to the Daily Show with Jon Stewart
Make candidates answerAt town halls, campaign events, and public forums, ask: “Will you support the We the People Amendment, H.J.Res. 54, and make Move to Amend’s pledge?” Ask for a clear commitment. Follow up. Let us know what they say. People are looking for a way to confront the power behind the crises affecting their lives. We have a concrete demand and a movement to build around it. Help put the We the People Amendment into interviews, campaign speeches, debate questions, and public conversations. Give people something to fight for. Make corporate rule impossible to ignore.
