CENTRAL OHIO: Speaking of Democracy...World War I's Christmas in the Trenches

On Christmas Eve 1914, German and British soldiers battling each other on the Western Front did a strange thing. Violating military protocols against fraternizing with the enemy, they emerged from their respective trenches and met in the middle of no man’s land--not to kill, but to sing Christmas carols, exchange gifts, and even, some say, play football.

This session will discuss these extraordianry outbreaks of peace by ordinary soldiers in 1914. It willl also connect the war's Christmas in the trenches to the UN's commemoration of its establishment on December 10, 1948. How might these soliders' actions relate to the UN's global efforts to secure peace for all humankind?
