Pramila Jayapal is Our New Champion in the US House!

December 21, 2018

We are thrilled to announce our new champion and lead sponsor for the We the People Amendment (HJR 48)!

We will be working with progressive superstar Rep. Pramila Jayapal to make sure the We the People Amendment is re-introduced in the new Congress, and we are over the moon!

Rep. Jayapal was elected to the Washington State Senate in 2014, becoming the first South Asian American ever elected to the State Legislature and the only woman of color in the Washington State Senate.

As a Washington State Senator, Jayapal fought for gender justice, expanded access to contraceptives for all women, including those on Medicaid, and introduced legislation to increase the statewide minimum wage and provide free community college.

She stood up to members of her own party against giveaways to predatory payday lenders, and secured $5.25 million into transportation pre-apprenticeship programs for women and people of color. In Congress she is active in a number of caucuses, including the Medicare for All Caucus and Co-Chair of the Progressive Caucus -- the largest caucus in the House.

Rep. Jayapal has and will continue to relentlessly challenge systems that corrupt our democracy, pushing for campaign finance reform, tax reform, voting rights and an end to institutionalized racism. In all of these endeavors, she’ll continues to build the movement to expand our democracy and create the political space for policy change that benefits working families and responsible businesses.

We want to thank our retiring champion, Rep. Rick Nolan (MN) for his support and hard work as our lead sponsor for the last five years! His leadership helped Move to Amend and the We the People Amendment surpass all of our initial goals. With Rep. Nolan’s support, Rep. Jayapal will step into the role smoothly! Rep. Nolan says:

“Congresswoman Jayapal is a perfect fit for Move to Amend and her commitment to getting money out of politics brings years of knowledge and unending passion to this cause. Over the past few months, Congresswoman Jayapal has been working with myself and Move to Amend to catch up and to find ways to promote the We the People Amendment so 2019 starts strong and Move to Amend meets your new goal of 75 co-sponsors for the We the People Amendment. I have no doubt this goal will be reached. And I will be watching and supporting from home in Minnesota!”

And we agree! Rep. Jayapal is ready to lead us to victory! But she cannot do it alone… We need YOU too!

We ended the 115th Congress with 66 co-sponsors, surpassing our original and upped goals! Our strategic goal for 2019 is to reach 75 co-sponsors, and we need your help to get there!

As the 116th Congress begins on January 3, 2019,
Rep. Jayapal and Move to Amend are ready to hit the ground running.
All we need is you. Please stand with us today!
