United suffered a heavy 6-3 defeat in the first Manchester derby of the season at the Etihad in October and that scoreline was made to look better by two late goals from Anthony Martial, who is a doubt for today's clash at Old Trafford.
However, Erik ten Hag's side have made progress since that derby defeat, as they have gone seven games undefeated through the festive period and beyond, which has given supporters optimism for a positive result against City.
City have the challenge of defending their Premier League title this term but they have not seemed at their best. Arsenal are setting the pace at the top of the table, despite Erling Haaland's prolific form, whilst the Blues also suffered a shock defeat in midweek.
In regard to team news, Donny van de Beek has been ruled out for the season, Jadon Sancho and Diogo Dalot are unavailable and Martial is a doubt. City will also be without England defender John Stones, who has a fitness issue.Manchester United host Manchester City on Saturday in what could be one of their most evenly matched Premier League encounters in years.
United have won eight games in a row and could equal their longest winning run in all competitions since Alex Ferguson retired as manager in 2013.
Second-placed City, who are four points above United, lost to Southampton in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.
"The improvement of [United's] team is clear," said City boss Pep Guardiola.
United are closing in on the loan signing of Burnley striker Wout Weghorst but he will not be eligible to play because he would have needed to be registered by 12:00 GMT on Friday.
Anthony Martial is a doubt with a leg injury, so in-form Marcus Rashford, who has scored seven goals in his last six games, could play as a centre-forward.United have only lost once in 18 games since a 6-3 defeat by City in October and Guardiola says Erik ten Hag's side are not out of the title race.
"When I see the way United are playing, why not? Their play is good," he said. "It is nice for us, the challenge to prove ourselves again."
Guardiola added: "I had the feeling that the strength and quality of Man United was always there
"It's just a question of being settled, patient and supporting the manager unconditionally. United are playing now how they played all their history.
"I said a few months ago that United are back. People say they're not. They're back. I knew it, I felt it."
Ten Hag, whose side are nine points behind leaders Arsenal. says the hosts must prove how far they have come since that humbling at City in October.
"We have to prove that [how far they've come] on the pitch. There is only one truth and it is always on the pitch," said the manager.
"It is not coming overnight, there has been a process in the last months where we develop, progress. We have to be brave, act with belief and play our game.
"We took the lesson [from the 6-3 loss] and from that point on we make huge progress. We have to continue that process."
Stones and Dalot to miss out
City will be without England defender John Stones, who has a fitness issue and also missed their surprise midweek cup defeat by the Premier League's bottom team.
Midfielder Ilkay Gundogan suggested they lacked hunger after losing at St Mary's.
"What happened didn't surprise me," said Guardiola. "We tried to avoid it and hopefully it is not going to happen again, but it happened because we won four Premier Leagues in five years.
"After back-to-back two times, this can happen. We were not ready to go there. I was concerned it could happen and unfortunately it did. I don't know if it will happen again, but I am not concerned."
City striker Erling Haaland has scored 21 goals in 16 Premier League appearances. He needs just two more goals to tie the Golden Boot tally from the previous three seasons.
United will be without full-back Diogo Dalot with a hamstring injury, while midfielder Donny van de Beek has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.
Man Utd predicted line-up vs Man City as Erik ten Hag certain to correct Etihad error
Manchester United were humbled in the last derby outing but appear a side with renewed confidence as Erik ten Hag looks to make a mark with a win over the championsOptimism on the red half of Manchester is growing ahead of Saturday's lunchtime derby at Old Trafford.
Manchester United can close to within one point of the champions if they extend their winning run to five games. Erik ten Hag's side were humiliated when these two sides last met as Manchester City hit six past their neighbours with Erling Haaland and Phil Foden both bagging hat-tricks.
Some of Ten Hag's selection decisions copped criticism that afternoon at the Etihad and he may opt to make certain changes. Casemiro was named on the bench but the Brazilian, who continues to grow in importance, will almost certainly be deployed to break up City's rhythm. He is likely to be partnered by Christian Eriksen with Bruno Fernandes playing in a slightly advanced role. Tyrell Malacia was one of the men to be hooked at half-time in the last derby with Luke Shaw coming in to replace him. The England full-back is likely to play from the start this time but Diogo Dalot has been ruled out, which opens the door for Aaron Wan-Bissaka
Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, the recognised centre-half partnership nowadays at Old Trafford, are poised to continue their partnership. Despite talk of his workload and the need to add another striker, Anthony Martial has an injury issue with a late decision to be made on his involvement.
Antony, who bagged a sensational strike and scored in the last derby, is poised to support him alongside Marcus Rashford, who is enjoying a purple patch. He came off the bench to score a late brace as United saw off Charlton in the Carabao Cup in midweek.
