Dominican Republic had a great performance in the preliminary rounds. While their wins over Kenya (3-0) and Japan (3-1) were expected, they stepped up their game to beat Brazil (2-3) and Republic of Korea (2-3). Their only loss was against Serbia (3-0) but their 8 points were enough to reach the knockout round.
Meanwhile, the USA finished ato of Pool B but no without suffering against some teams. They won easily against Argentina and China, both games 3-0, but they had to fight in the five sets against Turkey and Italy (3-2), while they lost 0-3 to the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC). Now, they will try to take down their next rivals to made it to the semifinals.
The team stepped up in their win against Italy, clinching the top spot in Pool B despite setter Jordyn Poulter’s exit after an apparent ankle injury. They already entered the game down Jordan Thompson, whose quarterfinal status is uncertain but is expected to play in the knockout round.
Team USA — which took bronze in the 2016 Olympics — may need another big performance from Andrea Drews, who led the U.S. with 19 spikes and 22 points on Sunday night.
The Dominican Republic ended host Japan’s hopes with a 3-1 victory Monday.
Viewers can watch the two teams square off at midnight Wednesday during the Tokyo Olympics on NBC.

The US Women’s national team and Dominican Republic have faced each other in 13 matches, with the USA winning 11 of them. The Dominican Republic have only won two times against the Americans. One of those victories came in their most recent encounter at the Norceca Championships in 2019. Their last match took place in May, at the FIVB Volleyball Nations League, with USA winning 3-0.
The winner of this match will play the winner of Korea/Turkey in the semifinals and is guaranteed a chance to play for a medal. Before facing their next rivals, US head coach Karch Kiraly said that Domincan Republic team is “very physical” so the United States have “got to be in good spots there.”
USA won’t have Jordan Thompson, who had been leading the team in scoring, as she injured her ankle during the match against ROC. Also setter Jordyn Poulter got hurt when she landed on a teammate's foot during a win over Italy on Monday. However, those roles are going to be for setter Micah Hancock and opposite Annie Drews.
