Dominican Republic had a great performance in the preliminary rounds. While their wins over Kenya (3-0) and Japan (3-1) were expected, they stepped up their game to beat Brazil (2-3) and Republic of Korea (2-3). Their only loss was against Serbia (3-0) but their 8 points were enough to reach the knockout round.
Meanwhile, the USA finished ato of Pool B but no without suffering against some teams. They won easily against Argentina and China, both games 3-0, but they had to fight in the five sets against Turkey and Italy (3-2), while they lost 0-3 to the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC). Now, they will try to take down their next rivals to made it to the semifinals.
