OHIO: Kent Democracy Day Public Hearing 2022

DEMOCRACY DAY FOR “WE THE PEOPLE”

    By Bill Wilen, Kent
This will be the seventh year Kent has held its Democracy Day public hearing. The purpose for this forum, which is held as part of the City Council meeting, is for area citizens to express our views related to the proposed 28th Amendment to the Constitution, which would “legalize democracy” by freeing “we the people” from corporate rule and get the “dark money” out of elections.
The proposed amendment would remove personhood from corporations and eliminate the notion that money is a form of speech.
The voters of Kent approved a ballot initiative for city council to hold Democracy Day every election year. Over 700 communities in the US and almost 30 cities in Ohio have also approved resolutions calling for “We the People” constitution amendments and public hearings including Akron, Canton and Cleveland. Democracy Day is part of the national Move to Amend movement to approve the 28th Amendment to the Constitution.
For more information on this cause go to movetoamend.org.
The Democracy Day public hearing will be held on Wednesday, October 5, 2022 (Wed.) at 6:00-7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at the Main Fire Station, 320 S. Depeyster, St., Kent, and will be broadcast live on the City of Kent’s You Tube Channel.
Any person wishing to be heard on the subject matter of the political influence resulting from campaign contributions by corporate entities should plan to give a 3–5-minute talk and submit a copy of your talk to the Clerk of Council at the public hearing. You can also attend and listen to the
    speakers.
Thank you for considering attending this public forum and, most importantly, becoming politically active by presenting your perspective on the money in politics and elections.

The volume of money spent in elections by wealthy individuals and corporate entities on both sides of the aisle is enormous. It drowns out and dilutes individual voices. As a result, “the many” – those of us who don’t make large political contributions or lobby elected officials –  are often not heard. Meanwhile, the “big bucks voices” support policies and programs that steer massive funding and tax breaks in their direction. Regulations originally designed to protect people and communities are often weakened or eliminated through their influence, and to their benefit. Even Supreme Court decisions have made it increasingly difficult for our democracy to work as we have come to think it should.

    Join us as we:

Summarize the problems: How does the corrupting influence of big money in politics, corporate constitutional rights, and “corporate personhood” affect our lives, communities, environment and democracy?

Hear from local advocacy groups: What is the impact of corporate overreach on their current work and future plans?

Discuss and strategize: Are there practical, effective ways to promote real democracy in Fairfield and Iowa? Let’s explore the We the People Amendment, sponsored by Move to Amend.

    ONLINE: Ecology Network Call

You are invited to join Ecology Network Call! RSVP below!A space focused on the relationship between corporate power and environmental catastrophe. We’re interested in gathering with folks who, like us, want an end to corporate destruction of the Earth for-profit and to create alternatives for a truly livable world.

Move to Amend has focused on ending the constitutional rights for corporations in the United States which are used to get away with; dangerous fracking and pipelines, spewing oil and toxic waste into the water, mountaintop removal, usurping community rights and violating treaties, and every other shameful action corporations take in the pursuit of maximum profit.

We have one perspective and hold one piece of the work, but the fight for the survival of animals and ecosystems will take many of us. The is a space where we invite folks who are fighting this fight to come and share with us, help strengthen the public education we do and uplift your work, and connect with other threads of the movement.
